TextTheCaller

Missed call text service
for plumbers

Plumbing is the trade where the missed call costs the most, because so much of the work is urgent. Someone with water coming through a ceiling is not going to leave a voicemail and wait for you to ring back — they are going to call the next plumber, and the one after that, until somebody picks up. If you were under a sink when they rang, you never even had a chance to compete for the job.

Why plumbers miss so many calls

Your hands are wet, or in a cupboard, or holding a joint together. You are under a bath with the phone in your jacket in the hallway. You are draining a system and cannot walk away from it. On a good day you will miss calls simply because you are doing the work you were booked for — and the busier you are, the more you miss. That is the cruel bit: the weeks you can least afford to lose leads are the weeks you lose the most.

The maths

What one missed plumbing call is worth

A call-out and a simple repair is typically somewhere in the low hundreds. A boiler replacement or a bathroom install is a different order of magnitude entirely. You do not know which one was ringing — and that is the argument for texting every one of them back automatically rather than triaging later.

TextTheCaller is £6.49 a month. Set against the value of the work above, it only has to keep one caller from ringing the next name on the list to have paid for itself several times over.

What to write in your text

You write the message once and it goes out on every missed call. Here's one that works for plumbers:

Thanks for calling Ashcroft Plumbing. I'm on a job and can't answer. I'll call you back shortly. If it's urgent, call again and I'll try to pick up.

Emergency work needs a way for the urgent caller to escalate. Since the text is one-way, telling them to call again is the escalation route — and repeat callers only ever get one text a week, so it costs you nothing when they do.

It sends from your business name

The caller sees your business name, not a phone number — so there's nothing for them to reply to. Give them something they can act on instead: a booking link, an email address, or a time you'll ring back.

One SMS segment. The example above fits with room to spare, and we'll show you the count as you write so nothing gets cut off.

How it works

No app, no new number, no contract.

  1. 1

Sign up with your mobile number

Enter your number, pick your network and set your business name. No password — we email you a magic link.

    About 30 seconds

  2. 2

Dial one code from your phone

We give you the exact code for your network. It tells your network to send unanswered calls to us.

    One time only

  3. 3

    Write your text-back

Use the example above or write your own. Next time a call rings out, the caller gets it within seconds.

    Change it any time

It works on your existing number on every compatible UK network, and only ever triggers on calls you don't answer. Pick up as normal and nothing happens at all.

Questions from plumbers

No — the message is sent from your business name rather than a phone number, so there is nothing for them to reply to. That is why the example above tells urgent callers to ring again instead. They will not get a second text if they do: we only send one per caller every 7 days.

The text is sent by us, not by your phone, so your signal is irrelevant. The forwarding happens on the network side. You could have your phone off entirely and the caller would still get your text.

Only if you let them. Add your merchant, your suppliers and your regular subcontractors to the skip list and they will never receive an automatic text.
