Missed call text vs WhatsApp Business away messages
This comparison usually ends before it starts, because the two things trigger on completely different events. A WhatsApp Business away message replies when somebody messages you on WhatsApp. It does not reply when somebody rings your phone and you do not answer — WhatsApp has no visibility of that call at all. The argument
Different triggers, not competing features
An away message is a reply. Something has to arrive in your WhatsApp inbox for it to fire, which means the customer has already found you, already chosen to message rather than call, and already got your number in a form WhatsApp recognises. At that point they are most of the way to being a customer.
A missed-call text fires on the opposite case: somebody rang, nobody answered, and there is now no conversation at all. That caller is not in anyone's inbox. Without something that fires on the call itself, the only record you have is a number in your phone log.
That is the whole distinction. It is not that one is better — it is that they cover different halves of the same problem, and most trades get far more phone calls than WhatsApp messages.

What WhatsApp Business does better
It is free, and it is two-way. Someone who receives an away message can reply to it immediately, send photos of the job, and have an actual conversation with you when you pick the thread up. A missed-call text sends from your business name rather than a number, so there is nothing for the caller to reply to. For anyone already messaging you, WhatsApp is plainly the better channel.
When WhatsApp is enough on its own
If your enquiries genuinely arrive as messages rather than calls — which is realistic for some younger customer bases, and for businesses whose work comes through Instagram or a WhatsApp community — then an away message covers your actual traffic and costs nothing. Check your phone log before deciding. If the missed calls column is short, this is not a problem you need to pay to solve.
The verdict
So which should you use?
Use both. They do not overlap. Set a WhatsApp away message for the people who message you, because it is free and it is better at that job than anything else. Set a missed-call text for the people who ring, because nothing in WhatsApp will ever fire on a call you did not answer. The failure mode we see is a business that set up an away message, assumed missed calls were covered, and has been quietly losing every caller who picked the phone instead.
